If possible, live closer in. It will be easy for the wife to go west to see


friends. But going east to work for you will extra suck the farther west you go.

Your best best to have a place that goes up in value is to get an older house/townhouse and either fix up part of it or if it has an unfinished basement then you could finish that off and add value. But at that price range, you will have the most options with a townhouse up there. Good luck.
